Janelle Monáe - Q.U.E.E.N. feat. Erykah Badu Video

Janelle kills everything she does and she doesn’t disappoint here. Check out the video for the first single off of Monáe’s forthcoming album, Electric Lady, which is set to be released later this year. She smoothly sings her way through the song and if you listen you might just be enlightened by what she’s saying. I thought there would be more Badu in this collab (she doesn’t make an appearance until 4 minutes in) but this shit works. Janelle doesn’t really need any help so anything from Badu is just a happy surprise for us. Not to mention after Badu’s contribution Janelle flips it and throws us a few bars. This right here is what music is about.

P.S. tickets for the D’angelo Badu show in Maryland go on sale 2morrow. Don’t sleep on this show.

ABGOHARD is on his G with Khepra. ”On My G II” is a tropical rainforest of a track for AB to flex his depth. ZUBAT is threatening to be a heavy tape, with huge range. AB controls an intensity by tagging this track with ancient sounds. He gives it stature with an obvious respect for the sounds behind him, never wanting to overpower them.

AB forms a character based on his ability to succinctly transport listeners to an environment. Khepra’s sounds boils down to the aura of nature and a drum set. Boom-bappy over the rainforest canopy. Simple, unwavering, and timeless. It captures both the expanse of the rainforest as well as that of the golden era of rap. In this environment, AB tells the story of a man growing from a harsh beginning.

He’s on his fuckin grind. He’ll sleep when he dies. The Jungle that raised him is the same place that erase him. The exactitude that AB dispenses is a rare look into the possibilities that lay before many artists today: they can break the common mold (which means so many different things these days that it doesn’t make sense to list), or they can stay safe (boring, but sure to please, momentarily).

AB looks at those choices and says “Fuck it, both.” He retains the acoustic patterns of rap’s past without boring us into stupidity. He ventures out, though, using the sounds of nature to create a unique atmosphere. This very personal track demonstrates our protagonist’s ability to divulge his character, enforcing it with the import of the natural world. He sounds like an older artist who decided to never succumb to tired traditions.
